Environmental Commitment

Environmental Commitment
Our planet is our most precious inheritance.  At Nordic Naturals, we honor the richness of this gift through environmentally conscious practices—in the oceans, at our offices, and in our processing facilities.  In partnership with innovative individuals and organizations worldwide, we bring you the purest and freshest fish oils in the world, obtained through our environmentally responsible fishing practices.

Nordic Naturals: A Responsible Choice for the Environment
Nordic Naturals uses three species of fish, none of which are overfished or endangered.
They are:  Arctic cod (not Atlantic cod or Rock cod)  •  Anchovies  •  Sardines

All of our Arctic cod are harvested from the lush straits between the Lofoten islands, outside of Bodø, Norway.  Likewise, our anchovies and sardines are harvested from the South Pacific and the Norwegian Sea, which are considered the world’s healthiest oceans.  The United Nations estimates that three-quarters of the planet’s fish stocks around the world are fished to their maximum limits or already exhausted.

At Nordic Naturals, we are committed to the responsible fishing of our oceans for current and future generations.  We carefully monitor the oceans to determine the areas in which overfishing is a serious problem, and receive weekly updates on the ocean’s health from the University of Tromsø in Norway.

“Best Choice” rating by Environmental Defense
Nordic Naturals is recognized by Environmental Defense, a national, nonprofit, environmental protection organization as a “Best Choice” because of our uncompromising adherence to environmental contaminant standards.  Our products are third-party tested, and show no detected levels of heavy metals or toxins.  Nordic Naturals guarantees the purest and freshest fish oils available while sustaining ecologically balanced fishing practices.

Did you know... Nordic Naturals has built a direct relationship with the independent fishermen in Norway in order to manage the sourcing and production of our Arctic Cod Liver Oil.  Since it is our mission to operate in an environmentally responsible manner, Nordic Naturals only works with fishermen who utilize 100% of the Arctic cod for human or animal consumption.

Certifications – Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program
Nordic Naturals has been awarded a certification with the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program. This association is a successful partnership of environmental agencies, utilities, and nonprofit organizations that assist, recognize, and promote businesses and government agencies which operate in an environmentally responsible way.  This “green” certification will verify that Nordic Naturals is in compliance with all regulations and adheres to program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution, and minimizing waste.  For instance, in the coming months we will enhance our paper waste-management programs, transition to water conservation practices, and optimize energy use with power saving electronics and light bulbs.  Nordic Naturals is actively working to fulfill our environmental commitment to the world and our community.

A Continuing Commitment Nordic Naturals dedication to the environment begins in the waters of Arctic Norway and continues through our comprehensive recycling and green-use program.
Some of our practices include:

  • Using packing peanuts manufactured entirely from natural cornstarch.  These renatured peanuts are 100% biodegradable and landfill safe.  They can be soaked in water, dissolved, and safely washed down the drain.  Shipping boxes can also be recycled as mixed paper.
  • Printing all literature on recycled paper.  We also use inks that are made from soy.
  • We encourage our customers to carry on our commitment to the environment by informing them on how to best recycle our materials.
